Innovation News at Brick City

Posted by SeanConklin On November - 24 - 2008

Over RIT’s Brick City weekend, October 9th through the 12th, the Innovation News published six editions featuring events in and around RIT’s campus. For Brick City, Innovation News created a cross disciplinary effort that included writers from the College of Liberal Arts journalism program, photographers from the school of photography, and layout implementation and printing from students from the School of Print Media. Primarily an open-source platform for
publishing news rapidly for web and print
distribution, the Innovation News uses a robust automated system workflow that takes in content and then publishes it almost instantaneously with the use of Xinet Inc. and Dalim Software GmbH which, without the generous software donations from both of these companies, a print edition and efficient image workflow would not have been possible.  As stated by the INews module developer, John Karahalis:

It was very exciting to witness the success of the Innovation News platform in covering the events of Brick City. Thanks to the web technologies which Innovation News utilizes, we were able to quickly and efficiently gather content, edit it, and make it available in both web and print mediums. Only two hours after the Jimmy Fallon performance, the Innovation News website featured a report on the event, complete with photographs and guest commentary. The first thing Sunday morning, guests all across campus were able to read that report and many others in a printed copy of the newspaper. By early Saturday evening, guests were able to hold in their hands a newspaper which reported on the events of Saturday afternoon.

The Innovation News team hopes to expand the project, at RIT in partnership with
University News and Reporter Magazine to see if these organizations can use the
technology. It is also seeking grant funding to support
applications of the INews process for cases of emergency notifications (think FEMA), independent
journalism, and customized newspaper publishing. As the INews team builds tools to make the project 100% open-source, they would like to release it to be
developed indefinitely by the open-source community. As is, it can
allow nearly anyone to build a publication. Look for the Innovation news at the next big event at RIT.

  1. Michael Said,

Please be sure to credit the use of Xinet Inc. and Dalim Software GmbH. Without the generous software donations from both of these companies, a print edition and efficient image workflow would not have been nearly as possible.
