Humans vs. Zombies

Monday, September 21st. The quarter mile begins a week long transformation into a zombie wasteland, all humans fending for themselves against the ever-growing zombie population accumulating on campus.

You all know what I’m talking about. Humans vs. Zombies has quickly become the event the majority of campus population looks forward too. Occurring every fall and spring since 2007, advertisement isn’t even necessary anymore. Students are foaming at the mouth to get into the game.

So where did Humans vs. Zombies come from? HVZ (as now coined by the majority of the game’s community) originated in 2005 at Goucher College, a small campus on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. The game has since reached “dozens of colleges across the country, as well as Brazil, Korea, Australia, England, and Canada.” In fact, the game has become so much of a phenomenon; http://humansvszombies.org/ was created in 2007 to keep a written rulebook for all to abide by.

Not to say that there isn’t any leeway when it comes to your own game. Fifteen colleges, RIT included, have their own version of the rules to better accommodate their campuses. There is a version that only lasts for a day, and one made for high schools. It’s no wonder the game is growing so rapidly in popularity.

The week ends, and this fall about 23% of the human population make it out alive, according to http://rithvz.com/. This is quite a remarkable number to come out alive after a week long stretch of running and dodging the enemy.  The campus is learning how to play. However, be sure that the moderators are already planning on making the game harder, faster, and more terrifying than ever before.
