Stephen Whittaker to Receive Zenger Medal

Whittaker, alumnus and adjunct faculty member of the School of Print Media at RIT, has been selected to receive the 2009 John Peter Zenger Medal from the Printing Industries Alliance (PIA). This medal is presented each year to an individual who excels in four areas: courage or heroism, charity, activism, and service. The recipient must also be currently employed in the graphic communication industry within New York, northern New Jersey, or northwestern Pennsylvania. Whittaker will receive the medal at PIA’s annual Franklin Event for graphic professionals on September 30, 2009 at Pier Sixty, New York City.

Inscribed on the medal are the Latin words, “Non numinis, virtue parator,” which translates to, “Not by money, but by virtue gained.” Whittaker has demonstrated his virtues in both his personal and professional accomplishments. Currently he is Vice President of Quality Assurance and Sustainability for Monroe Litho, Inc. in Rochester, NY. Whittaker organized the Committee for Sustainability at Monroe Litho and conducts all of the training in safety and sustainability for company employees, these efforts have allowed the Monroe Litho to succeed in being one of the safest and greenest companies in America. In community service Whittaker is an active member of the Masonic Fraternity for over forty years serving on various committees within the fraternity, including Past Master of Seneca Lodge No. 797. He is also a United States Army Viet Nam Veteran, having operated a classified mobile printing facility in a combat zone during 1969-1970.
