Signatures Magazine won a coveted CSPA Golden Crown Award!
Posted by under Awards, News

Signatures Magazine is a student developed magazine at RIT and recently won a coveted CSPA Golden Crowd Award.
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association is an organization of student editors and faculty advisors dedicated to upholding a greater quality of collegiate journalism. Every year they hold a contest to judge student run magazines, newspapers, yearbooks, and online publications. This year 1,759 total publications were eligible.
RIT’s Signatures Magazine was one of ten student run magazines to take home the top award: the Golden Crown. This 2008 design was a box that contained four pamphlets. Each pamphlet represented a specific tempo of music with representative content.
This was the first time in over a decade that RIT has submitted something to the Golden Crown Awards. When asked if winning the award has any effect on this years design process, Signatures Magazine faculty advisor John Roche explained, “It means more pressure.”
Signatures Magazine meets every Friday afternoon. Students are welcome to attend meetings and get involved. Currently they need student help to keep their website updated. More information can be found here.

Professor Riordan Receives Educator of the Year Award
Posted by under Awards, Faculty/Staff, People
RIT’s own Michael Riordan has been awarded the prestigious Educator of the Year award from the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF). In addition to the award, the PGSF currently provides assistance to 220 students in 80 different colleges, through scholarships. The award recognizes excellence in instruction of the graphic communication and printing fields. Ted Ringman, Vice President of Development at PGSF said about the award, “The award is unique in that only students receiving PGSF scholarships are invited to nominate candidates. Students nominate educators that have had a significant impact on their education and, in many cases, their lives”.
Professor Riordan, who is the sixth recipient of the Educator of the Year award, exemplifies the values recognized by the award both inside and outside of the classroom. He was recently presented the award at Graph Expo 2008 on October 27. Professor Riordan is a nationally recognized expert in color management and workflow systems. He provides an interesting and challenging learning environment for his students, and students respect his dedication to their education. Riordan is the co-director of the Open Publishing Lab, and he regularly contributes to student organizations and projects, such as RIT’s Innovation Newspaper.

SPM Student Wins NASA’s Intern of the Year
Posted by Elli under Awards, Co-Op
Sarah Kolb, a third year Graphic Media student, worked with NASA’s Lewis’ Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP) this past summer. Through her dedication and work on the Technical Library’s website, Kolb won NASA’s Intern of the Year Award. Below Kolb reflects on her time at NASA:
“I don’t think I could have asked for a better co-op than in the NASA LERCIP program at the Glenn Research Center (GRC) in Cleveland, OH. From day one everything comfortably fit into place. I rented a room nearby from fantastic landlords, who showed me all the major sites around the city. I was able to catch a bus to work most days; courtesy of the LERCIP program. Despite the stadium, museums, drive-in theaters, camping, Cedar Point and a number of great restaurants, some of my favorite days were spent just lounging around on one of the many scenic beaches on Lake Erie. GRC also hosted social events, tours and guest speakers to enhance our internship experience and learn about the current events in NASA.
“I was nervous when I found out I would be working for the Technical Library, especially since it was my first day; I thought I was in for a nightmare! Due to colleague absences and unavailable software I was stuck shelving old books for a day. Everything cleared up by the second day; we were able to get what we needed, and I found out quickly just how spontaneous and easy it was to work with my colleagues in our fast-paced but enjoyable environment. We brainstormed a lot of creative, innovative designs and concepts for the website. My mentor respected my ideas and gave me room to expand from the base plan. As a result, we completely revamped the Library Website, created a navigation portal for the center, and I generated interactive maps for my own project. The summer was highly productive; I was honored to learn I had won Intern of the Year. Out of about 100 interns, it is uncommon for a first-year to win the recognition. Working at NASA and with my team of coworkers and friends was satisfying enough. I’ve broadened my web design skills to a new level and will unquestionably utilize this experience in my future career. I know I can say I have made a few life friends, and earned valuable experience on my co-op, and I hope to return for another quarter.”
